Traditionally summertime is about going out. Like spies exploring foreign territories, we seek new places, maybe even a promised land. One goal in Buffalo might be to capture the sun when we can, to have fun and connect with friends old and new. Yet how do we construct connections in a time when the walls of our communities have been shaken by threats to democracy, as the walls of the temples were in ancient times? Our community is being broken down, and it is up to us to rebuild with more love, equality, and caring, for our most vulnerable neighbors. You may find yourself staying closer to home, traveling less.  In a time when attacks on our metaphorical walls seem constant, we must focus on the process of strengthening community connections and building bulwarks against hatred.

In our wanderings this summer, as the heat builds and barriers are further broken down, know we are here for one another. Remember our oneness, our interconnectedness.

Awaken! Consider a fast day from food, social media, or even from the news. Reset yourself. Reach out to people, those you are close to and those who need to be uplifted by you.

Be sure to take healing breaths and moments to recharge. Find ways to make friends wherever you go, wherever you are. Meet others in your community. Gain inner strength by going within. Find new mindfulness practices to relax. Sit and breath. Some of you love coffee shops. Swallow your fear and say “hello” to the person nearby. Strike up you never know what! Friendship and love may bloom.

Rabbi Yonina attended a wedding celebration July 9th for Solomon and Helen*. In New York City last year their mothers sat next to one another on a conference bus. They got to talking and a shidduch was born!! They became matchmakers for their children. I’m not saying that will happen to you, but you never know how divine actions can create earthly miracles. This life is all about connections and love. May you find the connection that brings you deeper into alignment with those you resonate with, creating great healing and good things for our community.

Feel free to reach out to Rabbi Yonina.
