Jewish Family Services of Western New York plays a vital role in helping immigrants and refugees rebuild their lives.  Every day, dedicated staff work hard to ensure that newcomers feel welcomed and supported in their journey toward self-sufficiency and fulfillment.

They are true mensches, and the results of their hard work are felt by families and our whole community.

Jessica, a lead case manager, often encounters individuals with unique talents.

One day, she reached out to Emily, the manager of volunteer services, in search of sewing supplies for a client named Brenda*, who has a passion for sewing. It’s not necessarily in the job description to supply a sewing machine, but Jessica knew if she could, it would mean the world to Brenda. To Jessica’s delight, Emily revealed that JFS had received not one, but two donated sewing machines. Jessica loaded the machines into her car, excited to offer Brenda the opportunity to choose one the next time they met.

That day, Jessica had an intake appointment with Iza*, a single mother of three who had recently arrived from Rwanda.

As they talked, Jessica learned about Iza’s impressive skills as a tailor, but also her fears about finding work in a new country. At that moment, Jessica was in disbelief that she could offer Iza a sewing machine right away!

Overwhelmed with emotion, Iza began to weep, expressing her gratitude and relief. This simple gift ignited a spark of hope, reassuring her that she could provide for her children and pursue her passion in this new home. Not only did Iza get a sewing machine, but she was referred to Stitch Buffalo, a local organization that supports refugee artisans. Since that day, Iza has been busy creating beautiful outfits for her children, using fabric and additional support from Stitch Buffalo. She has begun designing her own dresses, and her work is extremely popular!

Meanwhile, Jessica was able to deliver the second sewing machine to Brenda, who was equally thrilled to have the tools to express her creativity. Through these small yet significant acts of kindness, JFS empowers individuals to pursue their unique aspirations.

We are thankful for Jessica going above and beyond, being a true mensch, and the impact this had on Iza and Brenda’s lives.

Your end-of-year gift can make a profound difference. Together, we can continue fostering a sense of community and belonging, reminding everyone that they are not alone in their journey.
