In 2024, the JFS team embraced a new core value: Be A Mensch.
A mensch is a stand-up person, a compassionate individual who does right by others. So we wanted to share the inspiring story of Tom, an extraordinary JFS volunteer, and a mensch in every sense of the word.
Tom, JFS Volunteer in Niagara Falls
Tom joined our Niagara Falls resettlement program in November 2023, and his impact has been tremendous. Every Thursday, he dedicates 7-8 hours to our cause, arriving with a warm smile and the question, “What do you have for me?” His willingness to jump in wherever needed—whether creating files, accompanying clients grocery shopping, or helping them navigate essential services—has made a profound difference.
In January, during a critical time when many clients needed assistance at the Social Security Office, Tom stepped up. He spent six hours there, supporting clients in obtaining their social security and benefit cards, allowing our caseworkers to focus on other newcomer families as they were arriving.
Tom’s compassion and dedication are truly remarkable. As he pursues his dream of becoming a doctor, it’s clear he will bring the same heart and work ethic to his future patients. A true mensch, he embodies the mission of JFS, making a lasting impact on our clients and our team.
