Volunteer at JFS

Volunteer Opportunities

At JFS of WNY, volunteers are an essential part of helping our clients thrive. From supporting our newest neighbors to strengthening our community programs, there’s a place for every skill, interest, and schedule. Take a look at some of the different ways you can make an impact below. If you’re ready to get started, fill out our volunteer application! Questions? Contact volunteer@jfswny.org.

Set Up Family Apartments

Help our Case Management team turn apartments into welcoming, safe homes. Volunteers assist case managers in:

  • Furnishing and organizing homes
  • Creating spaces that feel comfortable and secure

We may need help with heavy lifting but those that are unable can focus on making apartments feel like home.

Help People Learn English & Connect to the Community

Assist our clients on a one-on-one or small group basis, helping them engage confidently with their community, both at work and in daily life. Volunteers may help clients:

  • Practice conversational English
  • Learn about life in Western New York
  • Work on resumes and apply for jobs
  • Navigate Buffalo and surrounding areas
  • Build friendships and connections

Your guidance helps our clients feel included, supported, and empowered as they establish their new lives.

Make JFS’ Special Events Shine

JFS hosts community events throughout the year, and we always welcome extra hands. Volunteers help by:

  • Greeting guests
  • Assisting with logistics
  • Creating baskets for raffle
  • Donating items for auction
  • Day-of event support

Even a few hours can make a big impact. Join us for events including the Matzah Ball (our signature gala) cultural celebrations, community events, or special fundraisers.

Organize A Donation Drive

Your school, workplace, or community group can make a direct impact by collecting items for newly arriving families. Coordinating a drive with JFS ensures that:

  • Donations meet immediate client needs
  • Families can stretch their budgets and settle comfortably
  • Common items include towels, linens, toiletries, cleaning supplies, first aid kits, basic tool kits, kitchen essentials, etc.

Provide Professional Expertise

Do you have professional skills you’d like to share? Your experience can make a life-changing difference for our clients. Many of the people we serve — refugees, individuals facing homelessness, or those navigating complex medical needs — rely on skilled volunteers to access services, stabilize their lives, and achieve long-term independence.

We are looking for pro bono support from professionals such as:

  • Lawyers and paralegals – help with legal services, immigration, or navigating benefits
  • Accountants and financial planners – assist clients with budgeting, taxes, and financial literacy
  • Healthcare professionals and counselors – provide guidance, advocacy, or health education
  • Educators, tutors, and career coaches – support English language learning, job readiness, and skills training
  • Builders, interior designers, and organizers – help set up safe, functional living spaces
  • Human resources specialists – advise clients on workplace expectations and job placement

Even skills that feel routine to you can unlock opportunities, restore stability, and empower independence. Unsure if your expertise is needed? Our team will work with you to find the best way your skills can help our clients thrive.
